Ever find yourself daydreaming about the future, and all of the possibilities that are out there? Ever wish you could stay focused and make those dreams a reality? Vision boards are an amazing tool that helps keep you motivated and determined to make your future real.
Teachers promoting a growth mindset will continue to encourage hard work and determination and the vision board supports the goals the student will strive for. Vision boards display words and images of what you want to get out of life.

Everybody has their own idea of what they want their future to look like. These boards help you stay on track to make it happen. Everybody is inspired by something different, and that’s what makes vision boards so unique. They are personal to you and display everything that YOU desire for your future.

I have created a children’s version of a vision board. Children have wild imaginations and have high, unrealistic hopes for their future. The purpose of this vision board is to help them stay focused and motivated to achieve realistic goals for their future. Vision boards are not “dream boards”; their purpose is not to set their minds to something that is unattainable. Vision boards for children should be created for something that is could happen in their future.

I love mind maps. In my research of effectively using vision boards, I realized two things. First, they are colorful, exciting, unique, and inspiring. Second, in a way, they are big mind maps. You are at the center and all the images around you are a part of your vision.

A hot topic in education now is growth mindset. We are trying to teach our children to never give up, to keep going despite the many hardships and setbacks they may face. Creating a vision board and displaying it somewhere that they can see it daily is an excellent reminder to help them stay focused on what they really want in life and to do whatever it takes to achieve it. They will be constantly reminded of why they are doing the things they do every day and the pride and happiness that will come as a result.

In the classroom, you can use the vision board many times during the year. Think about times when there are ‘new beginnings’ in the classroom. Do you start the school year in August or September? Do you end the school year in May or June? Or maybe you start a new semester in late January/early February?
Create a vision board with your students at the beginning of the school year and reflect back on their goals throughout the year. Create a vision board at the end of the school year to create goals for the upcoming school year. Either way, students can use this tool to periodically check in to make sure they’re on the right path for the future they want.

Students can work through the vision board workbook, describing attainable and reachable goals for their future, including intentions for their family, for school and themselves. The last four pages of the workbook are four worksheets that the students will tear out and assemble to create the actual vision board. They can use a variety of magazines to cut out words, phrases, and images that reflect their personal goals. If your classroom has access to the internet your students can incorporate technology to find pictures.

  • Love this idea! We are creating a new elective class at my school called “Building Leaders”. This will be great to implement with our students. Thanks.
