Refugee, by Alan Gratz is a wonderful novel for your students to read and ELA or in a Social Studies unit. Refugee is a young adult literature novel by Alan Gratz published in 2017. The book shares the stories from three main characters from three different eras; Josef, 1930’s, Nazi Germany, Isabel, 1990s Cuba, and Mahmoud, modern day 2015, Syria.
You’ll love watching your students collaborate. The activity is designed for students to communicate and work together. Encourage your students to find class members with poster pieces near their own to create their masterpiece. The writing activity is truly insightful and reflective of Alan Gratz’s central messages of “survival, family, empathy, hope, and happiness.”
